Determining the difficulty of a route

A difficulty level will be recommended to you automatically. It is based on two objective and measurable criteria: distance and elevation gain. Other criteria, related to the nature of the terrain, are more difficult to quantify and must be taken into account manually.

Distance

  • > 10km: Moderate
  • > 20km: Difficult

Elevation gain

  • > 300m: Moderate
  • > 1000m: Difficult

Other factors

  • Steep slopes
  • High steps
  • Exposed sections
  • Screes
  • Rolling stones
  • Fords
  • Sections where you need to use your hands
  • Difficult orientation
  • ...

Our tools do not have precise information about these factors. It is therefore up to the author and moderators to assess whether the recommended difficulty level is appropriate for the route despite these factors, or whether it should be increased manually.

The difficulty level can also be adjusted after publication, when we notice recurring comments on this subject from users who have completed the route.
